Thought is not an adjective!

I try to avoid ranting in blogs but sometimes you just have to! I have read 3 or 4 descriptions today where people described themselves as ‘thought leaders’ – a pathetic, self-aggrandising term by folks who don’t understand grammar. I learned when I was 10 years old that adjectives were describing words – so ‘X was a thoughtful leader’ makes sense. We may use nouns as describing words sometimes so ‘X was a Scout leader’ describes X as a leader of Scouts. But what does a ‘leader of thoughts’ mean’.  Of course, it means nothing.

English is a wonderful language which allows very nuanced descriptions – why do apparently sensible people feel the need to give credibility to these ridiculous terms.
